Paris is firmly pressing for a reevaluation of the UK’s “European status” concerning the streaming of TV shows and films, implying that certain titles could face restriction from streaming across the continent. Presently, the UK’s content contributes to the EU’s content quota on streaming platforms, comprising 30 percent from within the bloc.

However, post-Brexit, France is asserting that the UK should no longer count towards this quota, a move endorsed by Greece, Austria, Italy, and Spain. This maneuver could compel streaming platforms to remove a portion of British-made content from the “European” category.

Nevertheless, Germany has voiced its opposition to France’s proposition, cautioning against shutting doors on British content. German MEP Sabine Verheyen emphasized the importance of maintaining an open dialogue and fostering cooperation with the UK in various domains, such as education and arts, even as Britain remains a substantial contributor to streaming platforms within the EU.

As the policy landscape evolves, this ongoing discord over the categorization of British shows on European streaming platforms is set to shape the future of streaming regulations within the EU. The rules are slated for revision in the coming year, and it remains to be seen how this controversy will be resolved and what impact it will have on the streaming landscape.
