The stage is set for another blockbuster showdown at Wembley Stadium as Manchester City prepare to face Chelsea FC in the 2026 FA Cup final on Saturday.

For the fourth consecutive season, City will walk onto the famous Wembley turf in search of English football’s oldest domestic trophy. After painful final defeats to Manchester United in 2024 and Crystal Palace last season, Pep Guardiola’s side are desperate to lift the cup once again and keep alive hopes of securing a domestic treble.

Manager Pep Guardiola admitted the recent memories of defeat still linger within the squad.

> “Hopefully we can do better than in the last two years,” Guardiola said ahead of the final.

The Spanish tactician is no stranger to Wembley, having managed Manchester City there 23 times while also celebrating Champions League success at the venue during his time with FC Barcelona.

Guardiola described Wembley as “a very special place” and revealed he has carefully prepared his players tactically for the challenge Chelsea will present.

Chelsea Seeking Redemption After Difficult Season

For Chelsea, the FA Cup final represents one final opportunity to rescue something positive from an underwhelming campaign. The London side currently sit ninth in the Premier League table with only two matches remaining, a disappointing return for a club with ambitions of competing among England’s elite.

By contrast, Manchester City remain firmly in the title race, trailing league leaders Arsenal FC by just two points.

City arrive at Wembley after a demanding midweek schedule, having defeated Crystal Palace 3-0 in a rescheduled Premier League fixture on Wednesday. Guardiola admitted the tight turnaround has disrupted preparations.

> “It’s not the perfect scenario to prepare for a final because after the Crystal Palace game we basically had no training session,” he explained.

Midfield star Rodri remains a fitness doubt ahead of the encounter, adding another layer of uncertainty for the defending English champions.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have had more time to focus solely on the final following their 1-1 draw away to Liverpool FC last weekend. However, recent form has raised concerns among supporters, with the Blues managing just two wins in their last 11 competitive matches.

Interim Coach Hoping to Inspire Chelsea

Chelsea will once again be led by interim manager Calum McFarlane, who has overseen one win, one draw, and one defeat since taking temporary charge.

Despite City’s dominance in recent years, McFarlane insists his players believe they can overcome any opponent if they perform at their highest level.

> “Manchester City have an exceptional squad. It’s a huge challenge, but my players believe they can beat anyone if they deliver their best version on the pitch,” he stated.

Chelsea are aiming to win the FA Cup for the ninth time in club history, with their last triumph coming in 2018. Manchester City, meanwhile, are chasing their eighth FA Cup crown.

The Blues have also struggled in recent meetings against City, failing to secure a victory over Guardiola’s side since their famous 1-0 win in the 2021 UEFA Champions League final in Porto.

As anticipation builds across England, fans can expect another dramatic chapter in one of football’s most prestigious competitions when two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs collide under the Wembley lights.
