Veteran Nigerian actor Chiwetalu Agu has advised singles to thoroughly investigate potential partners before committing to marriage. In a widely circulated Instagram video, Agu warned against making hasty marriage decisions driven by societal pressure or desperation.
He emphasized that marriage should not be perceived as a life-or-death commitment and encouraged individuals in abusive or toxic relationships to prioritize their safety.
āMarriage is not a do-or-die affair,ā Agu stated. āIf you have an abusive partner or are in a toxic relationship, run for your life. If you are not happy in your marriage, seek help or run for your life.ā
The actor highlighted the dangers of remaining in harmful marriages for reasons such as financial stability or the well-being of children. He cited a tragic case involving a woman who lost her life at the hands of her husband.
āDivorce is better than rest in peace,ā Agu asserted. āSome stay because of their children or because their partner is wealthy. But what happens if you die? Who will care for the childrenāthe same husband who killed you or relatives who are focused on their own families?ā

Agu further advised singles to conduct thorough background checks before committing to marriage, stressing the dangers of impulsive decisions based solely on physical attraction or societal expectations.
āAlways remember to do background checks before proceeding to marry someone,ā he said. āJust because she is beautiful or he is handsome does not mean you must marry them at all costs. Rushing in without caution can lead to danger.ā
He also cautioned against succumbing to peer pressure.
āMy mates are all married, but Iām still singleāthat mindset can lead to fatal mistakes,ā Agu warned. āI pray we donāt make decisions that cost us our lives in the name of marriage.ā
The actorās advice has resonated with many social media users, sparking conversations about marriage, personal safety, and societal expectations.
