Los Angeles, USA – Spain produced one of their most dominant performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Austria 3-0 to book their place in the Round of 16 and end a 16-year wait for a World Cup knockout-stage victory.
The European champions controlled proceedings from start to finish before a crowd of 70,492 at Los Angeles Stadium, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring twice and Pedro Porro adding a second-half header to complete an impressive display.
After patiently breaking down a disciplined Austrian defence, Spain finally found the breakthrough in the 36th minute. Left-back Marc Cucurella delivered a low cross into the penalty area, where Oyarzabal calmly finished to give his side a deserved lead before halftime.
Spain continued to dominate after the break and doubled their advantage in the 66th minute. Álex Baena floated a precise cross into the box, allowing Porro to power home a header and put the match beyond Austria’s reach.

Oyarzabal completed his brace in the 89th minute after another perfectly timed assist from Cucurella. The striker raced onto the through ball before calmly slotting past goalkeeper Alexander Schlager to score his fourth goal of the tournament.
Austria struggled to create meaningful chances throughout the contest. Substitute Sasa Kalajdzzic came closest for the Austrians, heading over shortly after entering the match, but goalkeeper Unai Simón was largely untroubled as Spain recorded their fourth consecutive clean sheet of the tournament.
Schlager produced several outstanding saves to keep Austria in the game, including denying Oyarzabal in the first half and making a remarkable double stop from Baena’s free-kick and Lamine Yamal’s follow-up effort. However, Spain’s relentless pressure eventually proved too much to contain.
The victory marks Spain’s first World Cup knockout-stage win since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010, ending disappointing exits in 2018 and 2022. Their attacking display also suggests they are gathering momentum at the perfect time in the tournament.
Spain will now face the winner of the Portugal versus Croatia clash in the Round of 16, while Austria’s impressive World Cup campaign comes to an end after reaching the knockout stage for the first time since 1954.
