Global tech stocks have taken a hit following the sudden emergence of DeepSeek, a Chinese-developed AI chatbot that has quickly captivated users worldwide with its advanced capabilities and competitive pricing.
The debut of DeepSeek has raised eyebrows across the tech landscape, not only for its performance but for how it challenges the perception that only industry giants like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta can dominate the AI space due to high development costs.
Speaking on The Pat Kenny Show, tech expert Jess Kelly highlighted the disruptive potential of DeepSeek:
“It operates similarly to ChatGPT or Microsoft’s Copilot but was developed at a fraction of the cost. This marks a significant shift in the AI landscape.”
Rapid U.S. Success
Despite its Chinese origins, DeepSeek has claimed the top spot in the U.S. Apple App Store, surpassing ChatGPT in downloads. However, the chatbot isn’t without its limitations. Users seeking information on politically sensitive topics are met with evasive responses.
“If you ask about events like Tiananmen Square, it redirects you to focus on productivity-related tasks instead,” Kelly noted.
Such restrictions are typical of Chinese tech applications, but the real shockwave is the affordability and efficiency behind DeepSeek’s development.
Powered by Older Tech
One of the surprising factors in DeepSeek’s rise is its reliance on older semiconductor technology.
The AI was developed using chips secured before the U.S. export ban on cutting-edge technology to China,” Kelly explained.
These are not the latest Nvidia chips but components acquired two years ago, illustrating that impressive AI applications can be built with existing technology.
A Technological Wake-Up Call
DeepSeek’s breakthrough serves as a wake-up call for American tech firms that have heavily invested in AI innovation. The chatbot’s unexpected success demonstrates that technological ingenuity can trump the need for state-of-the-art hardware.
As the innovation race between China and the U.S. intensifies, DeepSeek stands as a testament to the global competitiveness in AI development, proving that the rules of the game may be changing.
