The surprise was a super surprise but a confirmation of what has been for centuries. Will the church ever go out of the norms?
History was made in the heart of Vatican City today as American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who is an Italian lineage was elected pope—taking the name Pope Leo XIV—becoming the first American-born to lead the Roman Catholic Church.
“Habemus Papam!” — A New Pope for a New Era
Just after 5pm UK time, white smoke poured from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, sending a powerful signal to the faithful gathered in St Peter’s Square and millions watching around the globe: “We have a Pope.”

Soon after, Pope Leo XIV appeared on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, offering his first message to the world:
> “Courageous and blessed Rome… Sin will not prevail, we are all in the hands of God. Together we must try to find out how to be a Church that builds bridges, establishes dialogue, and is open to receive everybody.”

A Swift and Unified Election
The election process took just under 24 hours, reflecting unity among the 133 cardinal electors who gathered in conclave on Wednesday. The cardinals—representing over 70 countries—were sequestered from the outside world to ensure a sacred and impartial decision.
This was one of the most diverse conclaves in Church history, with electors from regions as far-reaching as Mongolia, Tonga, and Sweden. Notably, 108 of the 133 cardinals were appointed by the late Pope Francis, indicating his lasting influence on the Church’s direction.

A Global Response
Reaction was swift and emotional. US President Donald Trump congratulated the new pontiff, calling it a “Great Honor for our Country,” and expressing hope for an upcoming meeting.
From the UK, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, one of three British cardinals who voted, acknowledged feeling “quite intimidated” by the weight of the decision and asked the public for prayers ahead of the conclave.

From the Room of Tears to the World Stage
As is tradition, after accepting his election, Pope Leo XIV entered the Room of Tears, where he was vested in papal robes before stepping out to greet the world.
He now assumes leadership of 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, inheriting both the blessings and burdens of a Church facing critical issues: social inequality, global conflict, declining religious observance, and climate change.

Remembering Pope Francis
The conclave follows the recent death of Pope Francis, who was remembered for his humility, compassion, and advocacy for the marginalized. His funeral last month drew global leaders and was attended by hundreds of thousands, a testament to his legacy as “the People’s Pope.”
A Papacy of Possibility
As Pope Leo XIV begins his tenure, many will watch closely to see how he builds upon the legacy of his predecessor. Will he champion similar causes? Will he chart a new path for the modern Church?
One thing is certain: a new chapter has begun for the Catholic Church—and it starts with an American on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica.
