The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected the announcement of a transition period to a civilian government by the new military rulers in Niger. “A three-year transition is unacceptable,” ECOWAS Security and Political Affairs Envoy Abdel-Fatau Musah said in an interview with Al-Jazeera broadcast on Monday. “We want constitutional order to be restored as soon as possible.”

Niger’s new military ruler, Abdourahamane Tiani, said at the weekend that a transition to democracy would not last more than three years. “Our goal is not to seize power,” the general said in a televised address on Saturday. He announced a 30-day “national dialogue” to develop “concrete proposals” that would lay the foundations for “a new constitutional life.”

ECOWAS had previously decided to assemble a “standby force” as a last resort to restore democracy in Niger. At the weekend, the economic community reaffirmed its readiness for military action, even if diplomatic is still the preferred option.

In his televised address, the new ruler Tiani accused ECOWAS of preparing an attack on Niger. “If an attack is made on us, it will not be a walk in the park, as some people seem to believe,” he said. On July 26, the military in Niger overthrew the democratically elected president and took power in the country.
