As Vienna gears up for its municipal and district elections this Sunday, the SPÖ (Social Democrats) is seeing a dip in support—now polling at 38.6%, down from 41.6% in the last election. The FPÖ (Freedom Party) holds steady in second place at 21.8%, while the Greens, ÖVP, and NEOS are locked in a tight battle for third.

🏥 Styria’s Gynaecologist Shortage Worsens
Health officials in Styria are sounding the alarm: nearly 1 in 5 public gynaecologist positions are currently unfilled. The hardest-hit areas include Hartberg and Upper Styria, leading to long wait times and restricted patient intake.
Preventive care, especially cancer screenings, is at risk of being delayed. In response, the Greens have submitted a proposal urging the state to integrate more gynaecologists into primary care centers.
🚗 Parking Gets Pricier in Innsbruck
Innsbruck drivers will now pay more to park in the city. The hourly rate has increased to €1.10 per half-hour, and the daily cap is now €9. A 34-year-old Slovak man suffered life-threatening injuries after climbing a stationary freight train at Vienna’s Stadlau station and coming into contact with a high-voltage overhead wire. Reportedly intoxicated, he still managed to call for help and was later rescued and hospitalized. Train traffic was briefly suspended during the emergency response.
🚨 Railway Museum Burglar Causes €112K in Damage
Police in Lower Austria have arrested a 30-year-old Hungarian man in connection with a string of burglaries at railway museums in Schwechat and Strasshof an der Nordbahn. Discovered during a routine traffic stop, he confessed to several break-ins that resulted in more than €112,000 in damages. He’s currently in pre-trial detention.
🚦 Easter Weekend Sees Lowest Road Fatalities in Years
Two fatal accidents occurred over Easter weekend—a significant drop compared to previous years. A tractor crash in Lower Austria and a motorcycle accident in Styria were reported. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner credited police efforts under the “Safe Operation” campaign for the reduced toll.
