Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, who held the position from 2013 to 2023, has passed away at the age of 68 due to a heart attack. Li, once considered a potential leader of the Communist Party, saw his influence diminish in the latter years of his service as President Xi Jinping consolidated power and shifted towards a more state-centric economic approach.

Li, fluent in English and trained as an economist, served as China’s chief economic officer for a decade and advocated for enhancing conditions for entrepreneurs. However, under Xi’s rule, state industries gained dominance, and there was increased control over tech sectors, leading to concerns from foreign businesses.

In 2022, Li was removed from the Standing Committee, marking a significant shift in China’s leadership. His successor, Li Qiang, took over the No. 2 position and expressed his role as executing Xi’s decisions.

Li Keqiang’s tenure faced challenges such as over-reliance on investments for growth and wealth disparity. Despite being seen as a potential champion of market reforms, his leadership style was more laid-back compared to his predecessors.

Li also played a crucial role in China’s Covid-19 response, with strict measures to limit international travel. Born in 1955 in Anhui province, Li’s political career involved various party roles and ministries, culminating in his service as Premier.

Li Keqiang’s passing marks the end of an era in Chinese leadership, with implications for the country’s economic policies and global relations.
